The powder-in-tube technology was applied to various functional materials such as e.g. the superconductor MgB2, or the magnetocaloric La(Fe, Co, Si)13 compouns. The powder is cladded by a thin seamless metallic tube and sealed with plugs at both ends. Cold working techniques including swaging and rolling were applied to obtain wires and tapes. In the case of La(Fe,Co, Si)13, wires appear to be promising in the search for alternative regenerator geometries, since they offer various possibilities of arrangements allowing to optimise heat transfer and pressure loss within the boundaries set by parallel plate and sphere beds. Tapes are required in the case that further processing, e.g. coil winding ist required. The presentation will focus on the latest results obtained from functional materials that are processed by the PIT method.
