Properties and applications of periodical surface structures formed with 4 Beam Direct Laser Interference Patterning

Direct laser interference patterning (DLIP) has already became a well-known technique for fabrication of periodical surface patterns on large surface areas. Most common interference setups implement the interference of two beams that produces one dimensional surface patterns consisting of periodically distributed line-like features. Such structures have already proven to be capable of influencing bacterial adhesion, wetting, tribological and optical properties. However, often the functional properties of line-line structure exhibit directional dependence, which can be a drawback for certain applications.

In this frame, using four interfering beams, we report on the fabrication of 2-D structures with translational symmetry in vertical and horizontal directions. Such patterns contain round shape wells periodically distributed in a square lattice. The structuring process of such structures is described in details in this talk. The dependence of fabricated structure morphological properties on processing parameters is analyzed. Finally, some application examples are demonstrated, showing the advantage of the four beam DLIP setup compared to the two beam configuration.
